Why does my electric keep tripping at night?

Our electric trips at some point most nights, usually when we're asleep. Nothing obvious seems to trigger it though? Is this likely to be a faulty appliance or something more serious?

"1st step - Unplug all appliances from the sockets before you go to bed and observe if the RCD trip. If it does not trip then it might be lighting circuit issue."

"There could potentially be something switching on during the night, and causing the trip, if you have anything which comes on at night for example a timer or water heater etc"
