What’s the white paint brand used for rooms walls and ceiling

Hi guys,

I have this room that (painted in typical UK white colour) have small scratches and stains here and there and I am looking to DIY and paint these small spots as there’s no need to repaint the whole room but so far all the paints I have tried seems to be a different shade of white than what the room was painted with originally.

I have tried:
- Johnstone's - Paint Tester Pots - Wall & Ceiling Paint - White Lace - Emulsion Paint - Easy to Apply - Dry in 1-2 Hours

Dulux Walls & Ceilings Tester Paint, White Cotton, 30 ml

Dulux Tester Paint, White Mist, 30 ml (Pack of 1)

Please help. I need the name of that typical UK white paint used for rooms walls and ceilings. Thank you for your help.

"Hi there. I hope my answ er helps in some sort of way. For you know the brand of paint used originally in your room ? Different brands leave different finishes in my honest opinion to best colour match the walls I'd recommend buying one paint brand and doing the entire area to acheive a full solid colour with no patches. Personally I use leyland trade as I find the coverage is good for the price and normally covers in 2 coats. Again I hope ny answer helps in some sort of way."

"Hi if you have stains then you won’t be able to just paint over with a standard emulsion, as the stain will keep bleeding through. You will need to stain block the area using a dedicated stain block paint the cheap Wickes brand does the job, you will need to apply 2 coats of this.
Then you will need to redecorate the whole ceiling to match.
You have to remember there are lots of different brands and then you have white and pure brilliant white and there is a huge difference between them.
And you also need to factor in the age of the paintwork, it may of been pure brilliant white but over time if people smoke etc then this colour does change slightly.
This is why you will always need to decorate the whole ceiling in order for it to be a good job that doesn’t look like a patch.
I always recommend Dulux Trade Matt emulsion, and it’s important to use TRADE as it has a lot more pigment. And I would use pure brilliant white.
When you coat the ceiling it will dry a lot slower on the areas that were stain blocked and will look wet bear this in mind before applying 2nd coat as will need to completely dry."

"Painting multiple paints on top of one another may be causing the colour change.. try sanding between coats?
how long ago was the wall painted? Perhaps the wall has faded or become dirty over time?
There are so many different brands of white out there.
Have you tried leyland trade?
Would probably be a good idea to just paint the whole room with a fresh coat, a tub of paint would be cheaper than multiple testers that are failing you.
Hope this helps"

"Hi the best way to fix your problem would be to completely paint the wall again you will never get a match painting little patches. The original paint will of changed colour over time so it’s impossible to match it."

"To fix the scratches and stains, use a sample pot of brilliant white or soft white from brands like Dulux or Crown. Test a small patch first to see if it matches. You can also take a piece of the original paint to a store for color matching. This will help blend the repairs!"

"How about Leyland paints?
Also how long ago where the walls painted? have they been exposed to much sunlight? This may change the pigment."

"Hi there.

This is a very difficult question to give one answer for. There are so many variables.

1) If the wall was originally painted years ago, the colour could have gently aged due to the environment of the room. For instance, do you smoke? Is the wall in direct sunlight, is it a kitchen that has been subject to cooking, or a bathroom with moisture? You could find the original paint and still never quite match the colour.

2) If it is a new build house, it is likely that the contractor used contract matt paint. This can be applied to plaster without it being 100% dry so that a house can be finished quickly. It's for show, it's not meant to be a permanent solution. Contract matt, is not very durable and could explain chips or stains that you can't wipe. Contract matt is very cheap and if you rub it (or the stain), paint will come off on to the rag. In areas exposed to moisture, it will not give any protection. The minimum paint finish I would advise is vinyl matt emulsion.

Personally I wouldn't keep spending money on something to try to colour match. 10 litres of white vinyl matt emulsion will cover about 70 metres squared with 2 coats. 10 litres of brilliant white vinyl matt emulsion will cost less than £30. Do the whole room and you will be a lot happier that you did.

Kind regards,
