What are straw bales?

What are straw bales in the context of above ground gardening? Are they used specifically with raised beds or can they be used for other gardening scenarios?

"Straw-bale construction is a building method that uses bales of straw as structural elements, building insulation, or both. This construction method is commonly used in natural building or "brown" construction projects"

"Bales of straw are used in a similar way to planters or raised beds. Instead of filling a bed with soil, a bale of hay can be used as an alternative.

The downside is that they may be considered to be untidy since they decompose and start to look a little scruffy.

If that's not an issue, they are potentially cheaper than planters or raised beds.

They will need a lot of watering particularly when fresh but are ideal for places where the soil is poor or the weather conditions are less favourable.

They are usually used for growing vegetables, such as potatoes and tomatoes but it is advisable to use a liquid nutrient to make up for the goodness missing from the soil.

I hope this helps."
