Can you paint of a water mark?

We had our ceiling replastered recently, then a water leak happened. The plaster seems sound although it's heavily stained. Do you think it'll be ok and can we just paint over the stain?

"Firstly make sure the leak has been fixed and the plaster is in good solid condition. Use a stain block first like Zinsser first and then paint over. Not using a stain block first will allow the water stain to bleed through your paint."

"Yes it could be painted , but would need 3 or 4 coats to cover the stain , I would give it 1 coat a day I wouldn’t try and cover it all the same day , it wouldn’t take"

"depending how big the leak was you then need to take in to consideration that the plasterboard will absorb that water so has that effected the board and after a week of the plaster drying you will the be adding more water to the ceiling to white wash the first 3 coats of paint which is 50/50 but you should be okay to paint over."

"Hi Cheryl I would recommend using Zinsser stain block first as a base coat and then paint over that as it will stop the stain bleeding through ."

"absolutely not to paint the ceiling, first you need to see the water problem well and solve it, then you can proceed with the painting"

"yes we need to use either a stain-blocking primer or an oil-based paint first. After that, we can apply an emulsion paint if necessary."

"I would recommend you first of all with the use of a ladder or a hop up, tap around the stained area to see if plaster is blown and sounds hollow. If it does, then hack off the damaged area, PVA and skim ( path up area). But if the stained area is solid and not hollow, then proceed to apply stain blocker around the stained area, leave to dry before going on to paint whole ceiling."
