What's the best way to prep tiles for painting over them and what are the best primers, paints and sealants to use?

To prepare tiles for painting, you should:

Clean the tiles thoroughly with a degreaser and allow to dry completely
Sand the tiles lightly with fine-grit sandpaper to roughen the surface for better adhesion
Clean the tiles again to remove any dust
Apply a primer specifically designed for ceramic tiles such as Kilz Adhesion or Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus 13 oz. Primer.
For painting, you can use a ceramic tile paint like Rust-Oleum Specialty Tub & Tile or a waterproof paint like Behr Premium Plus Ultra.

To seal the paint and protect it from moisture, use a clear sealer like polyurethane or a waterproofing sealant like Krylon Sealer or Aqua-Seal.

Yes, you can use PVA (polyvinyl acetate) as a sealer on newly plastered walls before papering. PVA helps to prevent the moisture in the wallpaper paste from being absorbed into the plaster, ensuring a stronger bond and a more even finish.

To apply PVA, mix it with water at a ratio of around 1:5, then brush it over the wall and allow it to dry completely before papering. It's recommended to apply a second coat after the first coat has dried.

Keep in mind that using PVA as a sealer is optional, as some plasters have low suction and may not require it. It's always a good idea to check with the manufacturer's instructions or consult a professional if you're unsure."

"Doesn’t have to be pva. You could use a thin coat of emulsion or a thin coat of adhesive. It’s just something that seals the new plaster ."

"Although this can work I would suggest sizing the wall, which is using a diluted wallpaper paste solution. There are specific wall sealing products or if you look on the back of a box of solvite all purpose paste it will give you the ratio needed. You must ensure the new plaster is completely dry."
