Using a detector to find wires in walls

I'm using a wire and pipe detection device to find wires in the wall before I put up shelves but it's beeping constantly. What am I doing wrong?

You have pipes or wires behind that wall also check the battery in the detector 😊

What brand of detector are you using, alot of cheaper stud and wire detectors are not very good and give false positives.
Best to not drill in permitted zones, ie do not drill up, down  and horizontal to light switches and sockets

Most of the time these detectors are unreliable and detect anything metallic.

Could be a faulty detector. Try on a know surface i.e a wooden table and if it continues to bleep you may need to reset device ( check manufactures literature ) or purchase another detector.

Most detectors are unreliable, they pick up any kind of metal. Including pipes,nails and screws.

The sensitivity might be set at too high...Is it a stud wall? Hollow plasterboard? If there are no sockets, switches, or radiators directly above, below, or to the side, you should be okay...Hope this helps
