Tiling building regulations

Can building regulations apply to tiling and if so, might it vary depending on the type of tiles being installed? What other factors might apply, again, if building regs do exist for tiles? Thanks!

"There is no building regs on tiling work as there is nothing structural and can be easily removed"

"Yes, while there are very few formal Building Regulations that directly specify which floor or wall tile to use, the installation must comply with several key regulatory areas and British Standards (BS), which act as the industry benchmark for safe and durable work. Compliance often depends heavily on the type of tile and its intended location. For example, the weight of the tile (natural stone being heavier than ceramic) is a major factor, as the wall or floor substrate must be strong enough to support the total load according to regulations regarding structural safety. Additionally, in areas like wet rooms, bathrooms, and exterior locations, regulations covering moisture resistance and slip resistance become crucial, requiring specific tile materials, non-porous adhesives, and often a proprietary tanking (waterproofing) membrane to prevent water ingress into the building fabric. Finally, the installation methodology must adhere to standards like BS 5385, which now strictly prohibits materials like plywood as a direct background for wall tiling due to movement."
