Should I turn my oven off at the wall?

I've always left the oven plugged in and switched on at the wall. A friend said this wastes energy and could be a fire risk. Is it actually worth switching off at the socket?

"The only power you would be using whilst not cooking, is for the clock on the digital pannle. Which is miniscule.
As long as you dont mind reseting the clock everytime you switch the cooker on and of, I'd say go with it to save a little energy!
But a fire risk it is not / as long as you.do not have anyone in the house that will play with the cooker whilst unattended."

"It should not be using any power when it is off unless it has a digital clock and timer which will probably draw in the region of 50-100mA (a mechanical one a little more). They are meant to stay on. However, as with all electrics, turning off at the wall is always considered good practice."

"Depends if you want to keep resetting the clock, it will not waste electricity,"

"Hello Tushar

If you got easy access to the isolation point then it's good practice turn it off from the mains due accidently turning on the appliances, most people store utilities."

"It would always be advisable to isolate the cookers power by use of the wall switch"

"As an electrician I can say that any standby device will use tiny amounts of electricity but for saftey that what the cooker switch is there for as I carries potentially up to 12kw of power to that outlet. Which is nearly 2x a domestic socket."

"Hi,

This does not necessarily waste electricity but the switch can get overheated over time and stuck, hence forth its best practice to turn the switch on when using and off when not using

Kindest Regards"

"You must switch it off due to the current will get through appliances and use some of the current therefore, there is a fire risk too"

"It does drain a bit of energy as the oven is under stay by mode.
But to be honest, the power consumption is nothing if the appliance is following the CE/UK standard"
