Self-employed builder vs building company

Are there any practical differences between hiring a self-employed builder and a builder from a building company? Is there anything I should be aware of?

"I would say it shouldn’t make a difference do your due diligence and go and look at a previous project the builder has done, this gives you the opportunity to speak to the client and get feedback preferably do this without the builder present. I would recommend getting a jct contract in place along with a schedule of works and detailed payment schedule this will give you full control of the financials.
Hope this helped"

"its better to use a building company as they have more resources and knowledge and the work is fully insured as for a self employed person there is no security of work which is being carried out, the next difference is self employed are cheaper to work with then a company"

"The company will invariably be more expensive. The common assumption is that a large company will do a far better job, this is generally not the case, the reason their 'tradesmen' are working for a firm is the majority are shall we say not the best!"

"Practically in terms of workmanship service and customer care only main thing is to look at the work carried out and jobs done by the professional you are hiring .. in fact self employed are found to be more reliable and skilled compared to workers hired by the companies"
