Replacing staircase

Will replacing a staircase make them less steep? How much shall I budget for a staircase replacement. Thanks

"Replacing a staircase can make it less steep, but it depends on the space you’ve got to work with. To reduce the steepness, you usually need more “going” (the tread depth) and that often means the staircase will take up a bit more room. If the layout allows, we can design it to be more comfortable and to building regulation standards.

As for cost, it varies a lot depending on materials and finish. A straight softwood staircase might start around £1,500–£2,000 supplied and fitted, while more bespoke designs (oak, glass balustrades, turns/landings etc.) can be £3,000–£5,000+. Best way forward is to have someone measure up and advise based on your space and budget."

"It depends on the going... This means the distance between the trimmer and the nearest wall. The cost depends on the finish. Budget £1000/5000 just to manufacture stair case."

"It really depends on the available space for increasing the run of staircase or whether it's possible to change the design of the staircase from say straight run to a winder or from a single winder to a double winder. Most new stairs have to meet the access and egress regulations and should not exceed the maximum pitch angle, saying that it is not possible to be exact without a survey to measure and design what's most appropriate in a given situation. The starting budget for replacing old stairs with new should be around £1500-£2000 but it all depends on the complexity and materials chosen for new staircase and also the making good after the replacement should be considered in addition to that as it is quite intrusive work and will affect adjacent walls and ceilings."

"Replacing a stair case will not necessarily make them less steep.
I am sure you could make them less steep if you had the space to do so.

As far as the cost goes. You would need to get someone to have a look, or at least give some measurements of the existing staircase."

"No, not unless you have more space for the total length of the stairs."

"Replacing a staircase can help reduce the steepness, but it depends on the available space and headroom — sometimes adjustments to the layout are needed. The cost of a staircase replacement can vary a lot depending on the design and materials (straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, timber, glass, etc.).

As a rough guide, a standard timber staircase replacement usually starts from around £1,500–£2,500, but more bespoke or modern designs can go upwards of £3,000."

"No they won’t become less steep this is due to building regulations rise of 175mm and the tread 225mm
Prices very greatly depending on the materials you use and newel post spindles andhandrails"

"Making a staircase less steep involves adjusting the rise (the height of each step) and the run (the depth of each tread) to create a gentler, more comfortable incline.

Cost Considerations The overall cost can vary significantly depending on several factors:

The type and quality of timber used

Whether the staircase changes direction (e.g. L-shape or U-shape)

The style of banister—from standard wooden rails to more premium options like glass panels with stainless steel fittings

Decorative elements such as Cracked Ice Glass or Crackle Glass, which can add a luxurious touch but also increase the price

Typical price ranges:

Bespoke staircases: £5,000 to £50,000+

Standard replacements: £2,000 to £4,000

Note: These estimates exclude the cost of removing the existing staircase and any structural reinforcement that may be required.

Professional Installation Due to the strict building regulations surrounding staircase design—especially for safety and compliance—it's essential to hire a qualified carpenter or staircase specialist. They’ll ensure the new structure meets all legal standards and functions safely within your space."

"Yes, replacing a staircase can make it less steep if there’s enough space to adjust the rise and going of the steps. The exact design depends on the headroom and floor layout. For costs, a basic straight flight might start from around £1,500–£2,500 fitted, while more complex designs (turns, landings, bespoke joinery) can be £3,000–£5,000+"
