Replacing a gambrel roof

I live in a period house in Sussex which has a gambrel roof that needs replacing. Do I need a specialist roofer to do this and how much is it likely to cost?

"Yes you will need a specialist roofer.. it all depends on size of the roof itself."

"Hi Karen
My suggestion would be to hire a competent joiner.. as a gambrel roof is way more complex than a standard roof.. the gambrel and mansard roofs will take a lot more work and as such the costs will reflect that.. as to exact cost I would need to either see the job if it is a replacement and you have no plans.. or a set of detailed plans.
Kind regards
AJ"

"Replacing a gambrel roof in a period house typically requires the expertise of a specialist roofer who has experience working with historical or unique roof designs. Given that a gambrel roof has distinct characteristics, such as its double-sloped shape, it's important to hire a professional who is familiar with the specific challenges and requirements associated with this type of roof.

The cost of replacing a gambrel roof can vary significantly depending on several factors, including the size of the roof, the materials used, the complexity of the design, and the location. Other factors that can affect the cost include the condition of the existing roof structure, any necessary repairs or modifications, and local labor and material costs.

To obtain an accurate estimate, it is recommended that you contact several reputable roofing contractors who specialize in historical or period properties. They will assess the scope of the work, consider any unique requirements, and provide you with a detailed cost estimate.

Keep in mind that it's crucial to prioritize quality and expertise over cost alone when dealing with a specialized project like replacing a gambrel roof in a period house. Ensure that the contractor you choose has a good reputation, appropriate licenses and insurance, and a portfolio that demonstrates their experience with similar projects. It's also a good idea to ask for references and check online reviews to ensure their reliability.

By consulting multiple professionals and obtaining detailed estimates, you will have a better understanding of the likely cost involved in replacing your gambrel roof in Sussex."

"Yes your need a roofer and no doubt need scaffolding to the side too, as tiles need to be removed and then individually re-bedded on bottom to top."
