Re Boiler Installation

Hello

We have had a combi installed which has replaced our old conventional boiler. We have however had lots of problems with the new boiler. There are strange noises coming from the boiler & also problems with the water pressure. If I put taps on it causes the bath hot tap to come on. The stream of water coming out of the kitchen hot tap was so fierce we could not turn the tap off so are no longer using the hot tap in the kitcen. The engineer insists it is just because we have old taps and is going to replace the taps. The main issue is that he did the boiler installation in a day with a colleague. I am worried about whether they took any shortcuts but don't know enough about this. Please advise as to whether you think this is just to do with the taps or whether it could be a problem with the boiler installation. Everything worked OK with the old boiler.

"Hi, it is easy to check if taps are old and are causing the water flow restrictions...open the cold water tap and then close and do the same with hot water, the cold water flow should be SLIGHTLY more powerful than the hot one... If they both have very weak flow means your taps needs replacement. If it's just hot water weak then he must have done something wrong while installing the boiler...it needs to be checked anyway by a heating engineer (proper one)."

"It shouldn't be making odd noises, that needs investigating. He's probably right about the taps. 2 people can complete a conversion in a day without difficulty. If the pressure is regularly dropping, there's a leak somewhere."

"You now have mains pressure so if the taps are old then yes you could have issues. With regards to the boiler you need to make sure they have cleaned the system properly and ideally installed a system filter on the return to the boiler to protect the boiler from muck and dirt."

"Having read your information the change from a conventional gravity system to a combination boiler can cause this as your previous system would have been gravity fed pressure to hot taps and now they are at mains pressure. This will happen if your previous taps are old with worn seals. As for a the boiler swap in a day it’s totally normal especially for an engineer and apprentice. From what you have said I wouldn’t raise reason of concern and would take the engineer up his offer to swap either the taps or the glands. If you find your pressure far too much you can restrict at the isolation valve if fitted but advisable unless needed. Hope this helps. ."

"I suggest you get shock arrestor installed on your boiler. Secondly some old taps can’t control the pressure of the water when a combo boiler is installed and the installer should have first explained to you that some of the tap and radiators may leak due to the pressure o from the new boiler"

"Sounds to me it could be the Taos - it’s quite standard fir an upgrade of combi from traditional system in a day - let him change the taps And see if it works - if not he need ps to search further if not I recommend putting a pressure reducer on kitchen supply’s"

"Hi Sue, do you have a water meter on your property?
It may help if the installer fits a mini-expansion vessel on the cold water main just before the boiler."
