Plaster in flood prone home

We're about to start putting our back home together after a minor flood and I was wondering if there are plaster treatments that deal with water/excess moisture better than normal plaster?

"It depends how bad the water ingress is. If the water has made contact with the walls and had any long duration of contact with it and made them sodden the water will have done damage to the bond of the plaster to the surface its stuck to.

Again depending on how bad the damage is you may need to rip out the walls or the bottom half of the walls and apply a tanking slurry or a salt neutraliser if there is effervescence(salt deposits) coming out brick work as any gypsum applied product will bring this back to the surface.

The repair of the wall depends entirely on what type of substrate it is. Get some de humidifiers on in your home to get the moisture out, that will help with further repairs.

Contact a damp proofing specialist to see if he can steer you any more in a right direction?

If its the ceilings that are damaged they will probably be best off ripped out. And re boarded, ensuring you take a look at the joist to ensure they are not sodden and rotted.

Best of luck.

"Hi , more than likely if water got to the plastered walls they would have to be hacked back to brick one metre high left to dry with a dimenifier then apply two coats of black jack to seal walls then render with sand and cement, once dry two coats of plaster ready for decoration. Hope this helps"

"Hi, your question does not give enough information for a suitable solution to your problem. Consider the following:

When you say flood, do you refer to leaks, or clumsy spillages after a good night out (or in) etc, or flooding following heavy rainfall, and flashy river, or other watercourse passing through doorways/walls/floors of your home.

Consider the building fabric of your home: Is it of traditional solid wall construction (consisting of stone, brick or a combination of both); a modern house of cavity wall construction (consisting of brick, block, timber, or combination of two of such. Is it of a non-standard construction, such as a 'no fines' aka 'Wimpey' - prefabricated concrete house. The solution to your problem will (and should) vary for each type of construction.

Is there a way of preventing water from entering your property? such as improving the permeability and/or drainage of the land immediately around your home. This would usually be a good place to start, and is often (but not always) the most simple, effective and economical.

Sorry about the long read, but I hope it helps you to make an informed decision for your course of action.

Kind regards,"
