"Yes wood has to be sanded first in order for the paint to stick to it. If wood work is not the paint would not last long and peel off. It is also necessary to clean of the dust after sanding with a damp cloth before painting."

"The answer from me would be depending on the condition of the paint and the timber, to make sure you end up with smooth even finish.
Always clean and and light sanding will give you this."

"Always sand down the woodwork even if is new!

If the woowork is dirty or greasy then you can use sugar soap and then sand it down."

"A light sand would be fine so it gives it something to seal to, unless oil based paint you would have to sand it all off."

"If its new unpainted wood ,no. Apply a primer and lightly sand between coats.
If it has been previously painted, then yes, lightly sand as this will improve adhesion.
Bonding primer eliminates the need to sand if you want to take that path."
