Outdoor sockets with timers

Can anyone recommend a decent waterproof outdoor socket with a timer that isn't likely to jam? It's mainly for use with Christmas lights and possibly for watering the garden in summer.

"For an outdoor socket that won't jam, the "gold standard" is to move away from the traditional mechanical "pin" timers. Those small plastic segments are notorious for getting stuck due to cold weather, grit, or the plastic becoming brittle in UV light. As of early 2026, here are the three best ways to achieve a reliable, waterproof setup:1. The Professional Choice: MK Masterseal Plus DigitalIf you want a single unit that stays on the wall year-round, the MK Masterseal Plus (Digital Version) is the most robust option. Why it won't jam: It uses a digital LCD display and internal electronic relay rather than a spinning mechanical motor. There are no moving "pins" to get stuck.Durability: It is rated IP66, meaning it is completely dust-tight and can withstand powerful water jets (much better than the IP44 "splash-proof" ones).Bonus: It usually comes with a 20-year manufacturer guarantee on the casing.2. The Modern Choice: Smart WiFi Outdoor SocketsIf you have a decent WiFi signal in your garden, a Smart Outdoor Socket (e.g., BG Electrical Nexus Storm Smart or Knightsbridge Smart) is actually more reliable than a physical timer. Why it won't jam: There is no physical timer at all. You set the schedule on your phone.Benefits: You can turn the Christmas lights on from your sofa or set them to automatically turn on at "Dusk" and off at "Midnight" based on the local sunset time (which a mechanical timer can't do).Reliability: Since there are no moving parts, the only "fail" point is your WiFi. Even then, most will keep their schedule even if the internet temporarily drops.3. The "Hybrid" DIY Method (Most Versatile)Many tradespeople recommend installing a standard high-quality waterproof double socket (like a BG Nexus Storm) and then plugging a separate timer inside it.The Strategy: Use a Digital Plug-in Timer inside the waterproof housing. Why this is better: If the timer ever fails or jams, you just spend £10 on a new plug-in timer rather than having to unscrew and rewire a £40 wall unit.Space Warning: If you go this route, make sure the outdoor socket box is the "deep" version (often called "High Profile") so there is enough room to close the lid over the timer and the plug.Comparison TableOptionReliabilityEase of UsePrice (Approx)Mechanical Timer SocketLow (Commonly jams)Simple£20 – £30Digital Timer SocketHigh (No moving parts)Medium (Menu based)£35 – £55Smart WiFi SocketVery HighVery Easy (App)£30 – £45"

"This is possible by using good quality timers at the source of electrical supply( consumer unit )
The wiring into the external waterproof socket is controlled by the timer and trip protected 30ma RCCD, fuse rated dependant on lighting load."

"The problem you will have, is mechanical timers are renound to going faulty in damp conditions.
I would advise a IP65 socket outside, with a digital control timmer inside, this would be a better option, if space and wiring allows."
