Open shelves in kitchens

What's a sensible height to install open shelves in a kitchen? And how do you make sure they're strong enough for pans, plates etc?

"Hi,
First I would use solid wooden shelves. With strong shelving brackets. All depends upon your preference. Modern, traditional etc. I would avoid anything manufactured with compressed chip or MDF."

"I usually install an open cupboard for the customers the same as the rest of their cupboard, but without doors. This has the same weight capacity as the rest of their cupboards, fits in line with them and keeps everything looking the same."

"You would need to use a strong enough bracket to hold the weight of pans etc

The standard floating shelve I would not recommend"

"It depends where your shelf are going? IKEA do very nice metal shelves for pans I fitted some above the kitchen sink and checked with my customer the height that she can reach them!"
