How can I ensure a bath shelf will last long in terms of water resistance? How long should a good bath shelf last?

If it’s what I’m thinking where it’s a shelf in the wall. There should be a slight angle so water doesn’t sit in it. Drying it out with a cloth / towel every few days. And keep an eye on the silicone. But should last the same amount of time as the silicone around your bath.

Structures near to baths/showers can last years if built properly. The construction of the frame inside the structure first and foremost needs to be solid with zero movement. To achieve that it is a good idea to use a good first-fix chippy who will build with the right tools and materials. Once the structure is boarded with the correct cementboard or plasterboard it would be a good idea to use a waterproofing membrane to prevent water ingress attacking the structure. With that basic groundwork in place you can then proceed to install tile or panelling grouted and sealed in the correct way. That is the basis for maximising the longevity of a bath shelf.
