Level sloping wooden floor in period property

Hi there

We have a sloping floor in a room on the first floor of our 1900's house in London, size is roughly 3.5 x 3.5m (13m2). It slopes about 3 inches from one side down to the other side. The current joists (underneath the laminate we took off) are in good condition. Can anyone suggest how much it would very approximately cost to level the room and put sheets of plywood over the joists? (we will add engineered wood flooring later on top). And how long it would take with how many people?

thanks

"Hi ! Thanks for the details—very helpful.

A rough estimate for leveling your floor (13m² room, ~3-inch slope):
Option: Firring strips or sister joists method (since joists are in good condition)
This is a common, cost-effective method where timber strips are cut to gradually level the slope, then plywood sheets are laid on top.
- materials should cost around £600
- labour price depends of many other factors but I'll say anywhere beetween £800 - £1200

Please let me know if you need any other info
Thanks"

"Hi there ,
I would remove the existing flooring to free all the joists, relevel each joist by cutting slots in to the stone or blocks and replace any damaged ones.
Next step would be installing new T&G flooring.
I would say £400 to be spent on materials and £800 on local labour .
It shouldn't take more than 3 days to a carpenter.
I hope it helps!"

"Hi there,
I’m a decorator/joiner based in the UK and deal with this type of issue fairly often, especially in older properties.

For a room around 13m² with a 3-inch slope, the usual approach is to either pack/level the existing joists or install new levelled joists on top (depending on what gives the best structural result). Once the frame is corrected, plywood or OSB sheets are fixed down ready for your engineered flooring later.

Very approximate costs:
• £600–£1,000 for labour, depending on access, complexity, and how much levelling is required.
• £150–£300 for materials (timber, packers, plywood/OSB, fixings).
So overall you’re usually looking at £750–£1,300 as an estimated range.

Timeframe:
• Typically 1–2 days for one experienced tradesperson, or 1 day with two people.

These figures can vary depending on what’s discovered once the floor is opened up, but this should give you a realistic ballpark."
