Lead flashing over existing cement

Hi - the existing cement flashing has failed around a chimney breast, cracks have opened up over time. Is it ok to put new lead flashing over the existing cement or do you have to remove cement first?
Thanks

"Hello,

Remove the cement first before installing lead flashing."

"No. Cement should be removed first — lead flashing must be chased into the masonry. Putting lead over cement is only a temporary fix and not good practice."

"Hi . Ideally you would remove the cement fillet so that the new lead flashing sits properly. Although I have seen it put over the cement fillet before but I would recommend removing it if possible and not to difficult"

"It’s not recommended to install new lead flashing over existing cement.

Cement fillets crack over time due to movement and weathering, which is why the leak has occurred. For a proper and long-lasting repair, the cement should be removed, and new lead flashing installed correctly by chasing it into the brickwork and securing it with lead wedges and suitable sealant.

Overlaying lead on top of cement is only a short-term fix and often fails again.

At Quality Roofing and Guttering Ltd, we regularly remove failed cement flashings and replace them with correctly installed lead flashing around chimneys to ensure a durable, watertight finish.

In short: remove the cement first, then install new lead properly."

"You can but I would remove and do the job all fresh and you know that it’s been done properly"

"Remove all cement if just repointing if putting a larger flashing over it all a brick above the failed cement line there’s no need as you new one will cover the failed cement line"
