What can I do to keep architect costs down when planning an extension?

Ask for a few quotes, and appoint one who can do both planning and building regs drawings and has enough experience to deal with building control. Cheap designers who only do planning drawings are, more often than not, a false economy. If you get a company small enough to not be registered for VAT purposes, you'll be saving yourself quite a bit in VAT.
