Is mortar on stone decorative?

The mortar on our stone-built home sticks out from the surface, creating a nice rustic effect. However, over the years it's started to break off. Ideally I'd like to wait until I have more funds to get it repaired. Is it merely decorative and OK to leave for a while?

"Hi, there are different methods and styles of pointing depending on the masonry/brickwork used to construct the property. Decorative stone pointing will be ok for a while but I would advise having the affected areas repaired but should be ok for a while, ( not knowing the extent of damage without seeing it I would keep an eye on it )"

"The mortar is Used to bond the stones together when laid the detail of the finished edge is decorative and sometimes can deteriorate but as long as it’s only the front edge no more than 10 mil deep dish would be fine to leave"

"What you have there is 'Weather Struck Pointing' - it isn't decorative - it's there to do a job and keep water out - that said - if there's no holes or gaps on the beds it should be okay until you get it repointed. If it's dropping out it either wasn't hacked out deep enough when done, or - it could just be age and is due for renewing"
