How to stop static caravan pipes freezing in winter

Is draining the water system enough to stop pipes freezing in a static caravan? We’re not there every week in winter, so I’m wondering if draining everything down is the safest option or if insulation and frost protection is the better route. If so what's the cost of that?

"Just get pipe insulation, that will be effective enough to stop the freeze"

"If you isolate the main stop cock outside and open up the hot and cold water taps this will certainly drain any outlets

For the central heating if it's connected to the boiler, there is a drain off normally close to the Boiler that you can just open up and drain any system water out of

Just make sure that when you're using the boiler that it's refilled up to 1.2 bar on the pressure gauge otherwise the boiler won't work as it will have low system pressure"

"1. Is draining down enough?Yes, but only if done correctly. Simply turning off the stopcock and opening the taps isn't enough. Water remains in the "low points" of the pipework, the toilet cistern, and the U-bends.To do a proper drain down, you must:Open all drain valves underneath the caravan.Empty the water heater/combi boiler (check the manual, as some require a specific valve to be turned).Flush the toilets and add anti-freeze to the remaining water in the bowl and cistern.Pour anti-freeze into all sink, shower, and bath plug holes to protect the traps.Use a "Blow Down" tool: Many owners use a compressor or a manual pump to blow air through the lines to ensure no stubborn pockets of water remain.2. Insulation and Frost ProtectionIf you don't want to drain down every time, you have two main options, but they come with risks if the power fails.A. Trace Heating (Electric Heat Tape)This involves wrapping an electric heating element around your external pipes, which is then covered by foam lagging. It has a thermostat that turns on when the temperature drops near freezing.Pros: Very effective; no need to drain down.Cons: If the site has a power cut (common in winter storms), the protection vanishes instantly.Cost: £200 – £500 depending on the length of the caravan.B. Leave the Heating On (Frost Stat)You can leave your central heating on a "frost" setting (usually $5^{\circ}\text{C}$ to $7^{\circ}\text{C}$).Pros: Keeps the interior dry and prevents damp/mildew.Cons: Extremely expensive in a caravan with poor insulation. If you run out of gas while you're away, the pipes will freeze."

"Pipe insulation (lagging) is the best option fastest and cheapest"

"You need to have a full drain down of the water system, it’s a simple job , but also it’s important to lag pipes as well as a drain down"

"Ensure the pipework is fully insulated properly. And if it's not used daily in the winter season. Ensure to run off thr water from the pipes. And Ensure shut off valves are fitted."

"Insulation – foam sleeves for exposed pipes and insulating walls/lofts to reduce cold spots.

Frost protection – low-energy heating cables along pipes, or a frost thermostat that activates a small heater automatically.

Combination – draining plus minimal insulation/heating for added security."
