How to sand skirting boards

I want to repaint all the skirting boards in the house, but they've got layers of old gloss on them. What's the best way to get a smooth finish before painting?

"It's really hard to get a perfect finish on old skirting. However if you can use a palm sander on the flats and use use good old hard work on the non flats with sand paper. you can still achieve a decent finish"

"Spray peel tec may need few cans. Spray it on leave it to work in fas directed on the can and easyily scrape away! Sand down , brush off any dust or hoover etc. wipe down with a wet cloth, let it dry for around an hour, Ready to undercoat, primer etc."

"Best way to get a good finish on skirting that’s already got layers of gloss is all in the prep. You don’t need to strip it right back, just get it smooth and keyed properly.
Start by giving them a clean first sugar soap or similar to get rid of any grease and dirt. Once dry, go in with a medium grit sandpaper around 120 to knock back the old gloss and flatten any brush marks or rough areas. After that, switch to a finer grit 180–240 to smooth everything off.
If the paint is really thick or uneven, a light pass with an electric sander will save you a lot of time just be careful not to gouge the wood, especially on the edges and detail.
Once you’re happy it’s smooth, wipe all the dust off, then you’re ready for primer/undercoat if needed and your gloss on top.
Key thing is you’re not trying to remove all the old paint, just dull it down and get a smooth, even surface for the new coat to stick to.
Hope that helps

"You will need a mouse sander and use different grits. If it has multiple coats of paint start with 60 working your way up (might be need it to start with 40)"

"It all depends on the condition of the skirting but usually different grades of sand paper , you can use an electric sander but I find by hand is better to get into the detailed area of the skirting"

"You need to sand the old paint well, preferably with a sander and if possible the rest by hand to obtain a smooth surface"

"Clean: use sugar soap to remove dirt/grease
Sand: lightly sand old gloss (120–180 grit, then finer)
Fill: fix dents/holes, caulk gaps, sand smooth
Prime: use a bonding primer (important over gloss)
Paint: 2 thin coats with a good brushh"
