"I would use a rake over the grass already there, give it a good watering then scatter the grass seeds. Leave for a few days then water it again"

"This depends on the condition of the ground at present. If its already a grass surface then here's my suggestion.
Spray off existing area with total weedkiller.
Consider the drainage. Good/Poor
If poor you need to improve drainage.
Once grass area is browned off by weedkiller (10 days) prepare the top into a friable crumb. Light hoeing.
Sow grass seed as per recommended on the box."

"clearing the area and removing any large stones, weeds and other debris. It's easier to fix soil problems before your new lawn is in place. For clay soils, mix in sharp sand to aid drainage and composition."

"Properly preparing the ground for grass seed is essential for ensuring successful germination and growth of healthy grass. Here are the general steps for prepping the ground for grass seed:

Clear the area: Remove any debris, rocks, or weeds from the area where you plan to plant the grass seed. Use a rake or hoe to loosen the soil and remove any dead grass or roots.

Test the soil: Test the soil to determine its pH level and nutrient content. You can do this by using a soil testing kit, which can be purchased at a garden center or online. This will help you determine if you need to add any soil amendments or fertilizers to improve the soil's quality.

Add soil amendments: If your soil test indicates that your soil is lacking in nutrients or has the wrong pH level, you can add soil amendments to improve the soil's quality. Common amendments include lime to raise the pH, sulfur to lower the pH, and compost or manure to add nutrients to the soil. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions when adding soil amendments.

Level the ground: Use a rake or hoe to level the ground, removing any high spots and filling in any low spots. This will help ensure that the grass seed has a uniform and level surface to grow on.

Tamp the soil: Use a roller or tamp to lightly compress the soil. This will help ensure good seed-to-soil contact, which is essential for germination.

Spread the seed: Use a broadcast spreader or hand-held spreader to evenly distribute the grass seed over the prepared soil. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the proper amount of seed to use per square foot.

Water the area: Water the area thoroughly, but gently, to avoid washing away the seed. Keep the soil moist by watering regularly, but do not saturate the soil or allow it to dry out completely.

Maintain the area: Once the grass begins to grow, mow it regularly and water it deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth.

By following these steps, you can properly prep the ground for grass seed and ensure healthy growth of your new grass."
