How to identify lead paint in older houses

We have just moved into a 1930s house and the woodwork has clearly had many layers of paint. How can I tell if any of the older layers are lead paint before I start sanding?

"The safest option is to use a lead paint testing kit or have it professionally tested before sanding. Signs can include thick layers of old paint, cracking or “alligator” patterns, but testing is the only reliable way to confirm it."

"Always wear a mask when sanding old paint in old houses. Lead paint can have no visual differences. Only way to know is to have it tested, Think you can buy these at home improvement stores aswell as decorating centers. Lead paint was only banned in the uk in the 90's."

"Lead paint usually doesn’t look like normal paint. It can be around 2–3 mm thick and sometimes has a texture similar to wood filler. Small rusty. In any case, it’s best to wear a mask just to be safe."

"When lead-based paint fails, it often cracks in a distinct rectangular pattern that looks like the scales of an alligator. Modern latex paint tends to peel in large, rubbery sheets or thin flakes."
