How to gloss without brush marks

Every time I try to paint gloss on skirting boards I end up with visible brush strokes. What is the trick to getting a really smooth finish?

"To achieve a smooth, streak-free finish on skirting boards, use a high-quality synthetic brush or a small foam roller."

"By using a soft roller or soft bristle brush, coating can be vital to the problem"

"Your using the wrong brushes. If its an oil based paint then you can use a natural bristle brush, which is usually black.
If its water based then use a synthetic brush which are a lot softer and usually white headed brush.
This will eliminate brush marks"

"If your using a water base paint you can add something called Floetrol it’s a waterborne paint conditioner that help the flow and smooths out brush stroke marks 👍 also helps keep wet edges . You could always use a smooth roller to -imitate brush marks especially in a window reveal 👍"

"If you aren't able to get your hands on a professional conditioner, don't sweat it—you can actually get a similar effect just by thinning the paint yourself.

Think of it like making the paint a little more "relaxed" so it flows better across the surface. If you’re using water-based paint, just add a tiny splash of water; if it’s oil-based, you’ll want to use a bit of white spirit.

I’d definitely recommend checking the back of the tin first just to be safe, but as a rule of thumb, you only need about a 5% dilution. You aren't trying to turn it into a wash; you're just giving it enough "slip" so it can flatten itself out before it dries."

"A smooth gloss finish is usually all in the preparation and application.

Make sure the skirting boards are properly sanded and dust-free before painting. Using a good quality brush or foam roller also makes a big difference. Apply thin, even coats rather than overloading the brush, and always finish with long strokes in one direction."

"Hi, what you require is technique more than anything.
Load up your brush properly, however don’t overload the brush itself too much

.Then you need to apply the paint in long, even strokes in one direction.

Then you need to start “lay off” lightly—run the brush very lightly and gently over the surface in a single movement of direction with absolute minimal pressure.

This will allow you to even everything out.
What ever you do not keep going back over drying paint.

That’s will be your fastest route in creating those marks that you definitely do no want"

"Hi. It depends on how much paint you are applying and what sort of brush you are using.
