How to fix a hole in the ceiling plasterboard

Can a ceiling plasterboard hole be repaired without replacing the board? It’s not massive, but it’s definitely noticeable, and I’d rather avoid cutting big sections out if there’s a cleaner fix that’ll still look decent once painted. Wondering also will this fix be something you can spot after a few months. Someone I told it about at work mentioned that I might have to replace the whole thing to get it looking right?!

"If it is too big for a basic patch, but not big enough to be worth cutting back to joists then I would clean up the hole. Cut it to a square or a rectangle. Take two bits of batten sized timber cut them long enough to fit through the hole and have enough over hang to properly screw in to the old board and the new piece. Cut a small piece of plasterboard that fits the hole. I like to put in acoustic mastic to fill the gap and reduce future cracking or even bonding, but most people will scrim tape the gaps. Sand the edge, PVA and then skim it or tape and join it with mud and then sand again."

"Make the hole opening 50mm by 50mm use a piece of battern to put inside across the hole then use a couple plasterboard screws to secure the battern then use a piece of plasterboard cut it to size them screw it to the battern"

"You don’t necessarily need to replace the whole ceiling — it depends on the size of the hole and the condition of the surrounding plasterboard.

For a small to medium hole, a proper repair can be done without taking large sections out:
• Cut the hole back to a neat square
• Add support behind (timber batten or repair patch)
• Fix a new piece of plasterboard in
• Tape, fill and skim over

If done correctly, once it’s painted you won’t see the repair at all, and it will last just as long as the rest of the ceiling.

Where people go wrong is trying to just fill the hole without support — that’s when cracks appear later."

"Yes, the hole can be patched using another piece of plasterboard of same thickness and plastered over using board finish or multi-finish. However, you need to make sure that the joints in the board (the edges and corners) are correctly taped with mesh tape.

as a time served plasterer i have seen many instances of this almost being followed to the letter, except the mesh. without the mesh the plasterboards movements will create a crack along the joints.

you can fade the plaster finish into the existing ceiling or wall so that it becomes unnoticeable after a paint."

"It all ways advisable to replace the section of bord and patch it in as there will be no f failure and patch it in a good plasterer will make it invisible to the eye"

"You can definitely patch in the ceiling. Using some battens and screwing them eitherside of the hole above the board and screwing a board to the size of the hole, scrim tape then fill!"
