Can you render in the rain?

We've got rendering booked but I'm now a bit worried about what happens if the weather changes. Does wet weather stop the job or can it be done in light rain if it's not too heavy?

"Traditional sand-and-cement render should not be applied during rain. Fresh render can be washed out, streaked, weakened, or develop an uneven finish if it gets wet before it has started to set.
* Thin-coat silicone/acrylic renders (often used with external wall insulation systems) are also normally applied only in dry conditions. Rain on fresh material can affect colour consistency and adhesion.
* Renderers often work if there’s a small chance of showers but will stop or postpone if rain is expected during application or in the first curing period.
* Many contractors use protective sheeting and scaffolding wraps, which can allow work to continue in marginal weather, but heavy rain or persistent drizzle can still prevent application.

Temperature and humidity matter too:

* Most renders have a minimum application temperature (often around 5°C, though products vary).
* Very damp, cold conditions can slow curing significantly.

Since you’ve already booked the work, I’d recommend asking the contractor:

1. What render system they’re using.
2. Whether they have weather protection on the scaffold.
3. What their policy is if rain is forecast on the scheduled days.

A reputable renderer will usually monitor the forecast closely and either protect the work or reschedule if conditions risk the finish."

""Best not to render in rain. Even light rain can affect the finish, so most tradesmen wait for dry weather."

"I wouldn't advise rendering in rain will leave finish render pock marked"

"If the rain if not too heavy where the rain will hit the wall that is going to be rendered then it’s fine. All depends on the driving wind also if that’s going to be pushing the rain onto the new wall."

"It risky to render in rain.there are different type render system. When we doing base coat and put mesh.it won't affect if it's light rain but we can't do top coat."

"Rendering requires a minium of two coats ideally applied on different days! The first days application (scratch coat) isn't quite as important as top coat so if plasterer confident then light rain is fine if render doesn't get hit too much! The top coat (the finish) should really be done on dry day! Unless its all covered up & 💯 no rain will hit render."

"Rendering should ideally be carried out in dry weather. While very light drizzle may not always stop work, fresh render is vulnerable to rain before it has properly cured.
Heavy rain can:
Wash cement and fines out of the render
Cause staining and discolouration
Create an uneven finish
Lead to cracking or weak spots
Affect adhesion to the wall
Professionally, it's always advisable to monitor the weather forecast and use protective sheeting if there is a risk of rain. If significant rain is expected during application or the early curing period, it is often better to postpone the work to ensure a high-quality, long-lasting finish."

"I’ve done it for years, especially when I was in my native Scotland.. Scratch coat shouldn’t be a problem with light rain; covering up scratch coat ( first coat) should mean zero problem.
However, top coat is a different proposition… nobody likes a ‘wash-off’
So:: be careful"
