Who’s responsible for cutting back overhanging trees? Who pays?

Our neighbour’s tree is hanging into our garden and blocking the light. If we want it cut back, is that our cost or theirs? Can't find a clear answer to this online

"You are entitled to cut to the boundary if you offer the material back.
They are not obliged to pay.
You may litigate, if the trees can be proved to have caused damage to you property by a tree consultant."

"By law you can trim branches over hanging property if no top on trees you can throw branches back to owner of tree but not good idea without permission.my advice would try go owner to pay or at least split the cost."

"I'm not sure who's responsible cost wise. But you are entitled to cut back any overhanging branches on your property & then politely offer them back.
If the tree has a preservation order then you will have to contact the relevant authorities. If you get on well with your neighbours then inform them of your plans & they might offer to pay."

"If the branches are over the property boundary it is your job to cut them back if needed, however you can always ask the homeowner if they would be willing to split the costs with you."

"It is clear that your neighbor is obliged to cut and pay the cost."

"You can only ask them to cut them back for you and let them know that it's causing a you problem as it depends on what type of neighbours they are if you have no joy with tht you can cut them back your self if it's not to big of a job and by law you can give them the waist back of it
Also they are not obliged to pay for it aswell
There's 3 options you can do

1. ask them to sort it out
2. Cut it back yourself and give them the waist back that's if you can handle the job your self
3.if it's really bothering you or causing you problems and you get no success from the neighbours them just hire someone to do it at your own expense"

"Some neighbours might offer to pay towards the work but It would be up to you to pay for the work ultimately."
