How much topsoil do I need for grass?

I'm laying turf on a compacted area that had gravel on it previously. How deep should the topsoil layer be? How do I work out how many bags to order?

"Hi. Firstly measure yr Square footage of said area. 2-3 inches of Top soil is sufficient for New Turf to take to it. I wouldnt buy bags, its an Expensive game! Buy yourself a good quality Tonne bag of Top Soil. If you have any left over you can use it for topping up pot plants or mix it with good quality compost and spread it over yr flower borders. Hope that helps. Kind Regards,"

"For a new, healthy lawn, you need 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) of topsoil, while 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) is sufficient for top-dressing or repairing existing lawns."

"Ideally aim for a layer of 10-15cm, deeper if there is subbase below."

"You will have to mesure in square meters to find out approximately how many bags you will need but you most ensure it’s level and to the correct depth"

"For laying turf over a compacted area that used to have gravel, you’ll usually want 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) of good quality topsoil as a minimum so the grass can root properly. If the ground is very poor/compacted, closer to 15 cm is better.

Steps:

Remove any remaining gravel/weeds.
Loosen the compacted subsoil underneath if you can (even just the top few inches helps drainage).
Add and level your topsoil.
Lightly firm it (don’t heavily compact it).
Lay turf on top.
How to work out how much topsoil you need

Use:

Length × Width × Depth = Volume

(Use metres for easy maths.)

Example:
If your area is 5m x 4m and you want 10cm (0.1m) of topsoil:

5 × 4 × 0.1 = 2 cubic metres of topsoil needed.

Converting to bags

Check the bag volume (often 25L, 40L, or 50L).

1 cubic metre = 1,000 litres

So for 2 cubic metres:

25L bags → 80 bags
40L bags → 50 bags
50L bags → 40 bags

(Usually add 10% extra for settling and levelling.)"

"If you work out the square metre to the depth youll get correct amount, 30sqm at 100mm deep you would need around 6 ton hope this helps"

"At least 3 to 4 inches over the lot if you go any less than that the grass won’t take and grow properly"

"3 to 4 inches is a minimum I tend to work too that will give the grass a nice root system then just measure the garden and how deep you want and that will give an idea of how much too order"
