Ask your QuestionI’m considering making a pallet sofa. How can I make sure that pallets are safe and fit for this purpose? Should I apply anything to them before making the pallet sofa? Also would the pallet sofa last long, do you think? Thanks for your time.

Answered on 6th May 2022 - Member since Jan 2021 - report"Hi Sharon,
1) The pallets need a good scrub down with soapy water and bleach as this will get rid of any residue on them (especially if used in the transportation of chemicals). This won't damage the pallet as they are generally left outside. Be aware there may be protruding nails these need to be removed and reset with a new nail
2) The pallets will need to be of the same size shape and thickness also the same weight as some have iron rings cast into the corners. You need to find pallets that have no split timbers if you do go for these pallets replace the laths
3) the whole pallet will need to be sanded down, better done by hand rather than belt sander as you may take too much off but sand with the grain.
4) durst it down another quick wash, let it try and coat with a clear lacquer/ varnish
It should last a while but depends if you jump up and down on it I guess, easy to repair the laths if they become damaged regardless."
"I think that would be better than buying a proper sofa and it will last longer"

Easier than going through it all on here."
"The back bearing pallets would need to be secured in a way they’re not going to shift over time, I would suggest bolts to ensure you can always retighten if it starts getting loose, depending on how tall you want it I would go two sets of pallets stacked at the bottom, sanded with a wood primer then the back pallets secured into the top level"

You can make the base, then back to the required height and width just make sure you sand down the wood to a smooth finish and you can dye the colour or varnish to finish off. Use a soft sponge filled in large cushions to place down."
