How can I extend the open time of a tile adhesive?

What steps can be taken to extend the open time of a tile adhesive? Is it okay to do so or can there be downsides to doing this?

"Simply put more water into the mix.

Pro: it would spread out better under the tile and the floor. It would be easier to level it.

Con: it takes longer to dry. The tile may drop if the floor isn't completely levelled."

"To extend the open time of tile adhesive you must use a standard-setting adhesive not a rapid setting and you must keep to the mix guidelines on the instructions as they are what is required to have a good adhesive mix that is consistent with your tiling work."
