Can I put a heat pump in an older house?

There seems to be a lot of debate about whether heat pumps work in older homes. What does an old house need for one to work effectively?

"I really would not bother at the moment . Verry expensive to run at the moment and realistically will only work with external wall insulation . The government are pushing these systems to bring the Carbon footprint down .
We have never had a happy long term customer,
It’s a new ish technology that is far from perfected"

"No, the heat pump will cost you much more if you have an old house, heat pump is designed for a new or good insulated house."

"Heat pumps can be installed in old houses however the effectiveness of them operating efficiently is the big question. EPC ratings and heat loss play a big part in the overall equation"

"Personally I would say your home needs to be draught proof , insulated walls and loft space .
Heat pumps in my opinion are not very good
Definitely no where near as good as gas fired central heating . I would consider installing a hydrogen ready boiler rather than a heat pump"

"Nothing to stop you, other than it would be very expensive to run.
Any company that came out to estimate for you would need to carryout quite an extensive survey of the property regarding it heat-loss. If they don't carry out this survey, they are not worth dealing with. The problem with our older housing stock is they were built during an era of cheap energy, open chimneys, cavity walls with no insulation, they just hemorrhage the heat you have produced I'm afraid.
it is all about the insulation levels as others here have mentioned."

"Heat pumps will not be effective in old houses that have solid walls without insulation."

"Get it surveyed by someone qualified, they can be fitted to any property really but you’d probably have to look at insulating the property"

"as someone said you can fit a heat pump to any house but if you are not well enough insulated it is a waste of money"

"Hi, the heat pumps are working on full efficiency when the delivered temperature is a lot lower than a conventional boiler. The heat pump will be the first step of the project. You may consider to increase the size of the radiators to allow the pump to work most efficiently and then to insulate better the property.
The answer is yes if your home is not loosing to much heat."
