Filling a dent in plasterwork

The wall of our hallway has been knocked with a bike handlebar and it's left a dent. Some of the dented plaster is loose. Should I remove this before filling?

"Yes , but you will need something behind to take the new plaster if the dent has left a void in the wall."

"Yes, any loose plaster could cause weakening of more plaster, also could come loose while applying new plaster causing it to ruin the finishing touch"

"Yes you should. To recreate and stronger and more durable structure.
Loose plaster might be caused from either dampness beneath the surface or poor application."

"Yes you have to remove the loose plaster ! If it's just a small dent it is easy to fix !"

"If it is a solid wall I.e brick or block then yes definitely pull any loose only around the hole, then fill the hole with filler and leave it so it is protruding out a bit. Don't try to get it flat straight away. When filler dries it shrinks so once it's dried you can sand it flat."
