Does a combi boiler need a water tank?

If I switch to a combi boiler, what happens to the existing water tank? Can I make use of it in the system, or do I just get it removed?

"By water tank i am assuming its the hotwater clylinder and yes it would be not required as hotwater comes direct from boiler and if you mean watertank in attic supplying gravity fed water to heating system would also be renered useless"

"You can use a hot water tank on a combi system it’s called a storage, it would benefit a property that has many hot water outlets so ie a large property."

"A combi boiler does not need a water tank, as it heats water directly from the mains on demand. When switching to a combi, existing tanks are usually removed, freeing up valuable space in the loft and airing cupboard."

"If you convert to a combi then the water storage tanks in the loft and Hot water cylinder will be removed as they're not required. The combi heats mains water instantaneously as it passes through and the heating side is sealed. You will gain some new storage space!

Combis however arent suitable for every property but a competent heating engineer will be able to survey and take in to account all the variables to determine the best solution."

"NO, COMBI BOILER HEAT UP THE WATER INSTANTLY, REGULAR BOILERS AND SYSTEM INSTEAD REQUIRE A WATER CYLINDER"

"The combi boiler heats water as it's used. The tanks are redundant and no longer used so removed when converting the system usually"

"I would suggest keeping it and using the combi without the hot water element. A heating engineer can help if you have questions."

"All new Boilers are now Condensing. Which are more efficient and cost effective than combi Boilers. The gravity system which usually have the water tank will no longer be required and you will get instant hot water from the new Condensing Boilers"
