Do you need to move the fuse box for a garage conversion?

We want to convert our integral garage and there's a consumer unit in there at the moment. Does it have to move or can the electrician work around it during the conversion?

If the consumer unit supplies the whole house and new circuits were to be added then the existing board would probably need to be upgraded to today’s standards. The electrician carrying out the works will know the best course of action

Not always. A consumer unit can often remain in place during a garage conversion, provided it stays easily accessible and complies with current regulations. If it ends up inside a cupboard or behind furniture, relocation may be recommended. An electrician can advise after assessing the layout.

Aslong as the consumer unit isn’t going to affect the wall you brick up or install a window on, aslong as it’s at the correct height (middle of the fuses between 1350-1450) there isn’t really a reason to move it

It all depends on your requirements, if the consumer unit supplies the garage, you would to remove it, when the electrician installs the new cabling. However if it is the main consumer unit for the property he can work around it and you can have a joiner build a nice cupboard to hide it away.
