Changing a ceiling light

Question

Hi, I’m trying to change a ceiling light, but when I turn off the main switches on the electrical panel the tester pen still lights up when I touch the earth wire(green and yellow) what should I do to make this as safe as possible?

Call an electrician.

How have you isolated light? From switch on wall or the whole circuit via RCD etc?
Pen tester not really the ideal took as it may be picking up line conductor.
Is it a multi switched light? Check connections.

As most said. A voltage tester isn’t the way to go. If your asking this question you really need an electrician to deal with it. Sorry!!

Don’t use a test pen as a tester and get a qualified electrician to change the light as it sounds like you may have a fault on the wiring in your property

Voltage testers are reliable, I advice you to use an approved set of voltage testers as the PEN and give false positives

Get an electrician in to test the circuit and make sure is electrically sound

If your earth is showing live that's quite a major concern I would deffinately contact a electrician to check it out as could not end very well if it does become live

Turn off consumer unit via main switch.

Call an electrician to check it for you, you can also switch breaker 1 by 1 till you find the right one to isolate

You need to test the circuit with an approved test lamp or other suitable equipment NOT a tester pen, if you’re in any doubt (you obviously are) get a qualified electrician to do the work.

The earth wire is not a life conducter, if the power was or on the pen would not light up on an earth conducter
