Cement-free mortar

Is cement-free mortar any good? I want a sustainable build but not at the expense of strength and durability.

"Always use Cement in it, but you can use a little less mix of Cement in your mortar if you want to go Cement free, but use Cement as it only gets stronger over time. And of course it brings strength and durability."

"Hi there
The only other option of mortar in Lime mortar which is what people used before cement was invented, its white and a little bit flexible, so you don't get as many cracks in the wall because it can move slightly. Lime is actually more money than cement."

"You need a lime sand mortar, it takes longer to dry and needs protection from sun, heat and rain, lime mortar breaths and let's moisture escape."
