Building a bug hotel

My son wants to build a ‘bug hotel’ for insects in the garden. He’s crazy about insects and insists that I take every measure to ensure they’ll be okay! So what steps can I take to make sure our bug hotel is insect friendly? I know that’s not a question you’ll probably get every day haha! Thanks.

"Hi
I hope that you are well. Iam glad that your son likes bugs, without them we wouldnt have larger animals such as birds in our gardens. Best to recycle bits of timber, make a frame work and have small gaps inbetween, Basically create a wood pile, this is what wood louse adore, they are the small grey creatures that look like minature armadillos. They break dowm the timber creating a habitat for other creatures. Always leave a bit of the garden wild. Also put the wood pile in an environment which is damp, aids the breakdown quicker.

Good luck and have a good christmas."

"Hi Lauren

Basically you need to build a structure which need not be too big and it needs to be split into sections rather like a small ladder and I then put a back onto mine.
My hotel was about 15" high and around 9" wide.
The important thing is to fill with a variety of items such as sticks & twigs, dry leaves, wooden blocks etc.
I then put a small roof on the top to keep it dry and put it in a sheltered but sunny position"

"Consider the type of bugs in your area. Ideally, an insect hotel will be appealing to a wide variety of bugs.
Create holes. Many different types of bugs like to have crevices to hide in. It's a good idea to have at least one...
Gather materials outside. You want to fill your insect hotel with as many items as possible. Once you've made a few...
Add straw and hay. In addition to gathering materials outside, you should purchase straw and hay for your house."
