Biodiversity via hedging

How can I add biodiversity to my garden using hedging?

"Planting a native, mixed species hedge is a great start... Hazel, buckthorn alder, guelder Rose, elderflower, wild pear, bird cherry crab apple. These are all great species for birds. The spines provide protection from predators, and fruit + nuts provide food.

Furthermore, the shady shelter below the hedge can also be valued by hedgehogs and other small mammals. Small piles of brash, constructs with old bricks and slabs etc etc. Providing shelter and breeding spaces for them, in areas out of sight of humans!

In addition, consider cutting 100mm diameter circle holes at ground level so small mammals can pass between gardens.

Finally, consider when you cut the hedge. Avoid March - July... nesting and breeding season."

"Native shrubs and trees like hawthorn, field maple, blackthorn, beech, hornbeam and holly make an ideal mixture of hedging plants. Grow rambling plants, such as wild rose, bramble and honeysuckle, through your hedge to provide even more shelter and food for wildlife."

"Depends on the hedging.
Swap out privet and laurel for hawthorn, elder, dog rose or crab apple - they can be just as dense but are flowery and attractive to bees.
They will shed leaves and form a litter bed for voles, shrews and hedgehogs. Chuck some grass seed or wildflower seeds occasionally along the hedge too and it will form a corridor for wildlife."
