Are surge-protection extension leads necessary?

If my electrics and consumer unit are up to date, do I still need surge-protection on an extension lead?

"They'll protect all your expensive electrical items, from any spikes, that can damage the smaller electronics.
New fuseboards are now fitted with surge protection, with the additional type A rcbos."

"You don't need surge protection if your fuse board is up to date and has built in surge protection. If it doesn't, surge protection on an extension lead will protect electronic items such as computers , TVs etc so better to have than not."

"Not all "up to date" supplies are surge protected, no problem if they are but the cost of a surge protected extension lead is minimal to protect sensitive electronics"
