Architect drawings for extension cost

How much do architect drawings for an extension cost? Can I get away with not getting them or is it really something the builders need?

"Hi Cheryl, any development that requires building control will require drawing/plans. Cost wise you could be looking at in excess of £500- £1000"

"Architect drawings for an extension usually cost around £800 to £2,500, depending on how big or detailed the job is.

You can sometimes get away without them for very small, straightforward extensions, but for most builds it’s not ideal. Builders rely on drawings to know exactly what’s being done, and without them things can get unclear pretty quickly.

Good drawings help with accurate pricing, avoid misunderstandings on site, and make building control much smoother. They usually save time, stress, and extra costs later on."

"Architect drawings for an extension typically cost anywhere from £800 to £3,000 depending on the size and complexity of the project. While very small extensions can sometimes be built from basic plans, most builders will need proper drawings for accurate quotes, planning permission, and building control approval. They also help avoid mistakes and disputes during the build."

"This completely depends on whether the extension is within building regulations,"

"It depends on the size of works you can apply for a building notice which means can start as long as a building inspector has been appointed and this will cost."

"• Drawings usually cost £1,000–£2,500 for planning, and £3,000–£6,000+ for full building-regs drawings.
• An architect isn’t legally required, but proper drawings are.
• Builders need clear, scaled plans to price and build correctly — rough sketches aren’t enough.
• You can save money by using a drafter or architectural technologist instead of a full architect.

In short: you may skip the architect, but you can’t skip the drawings."
