Air con compressor replacement cost

Question

The air con unit in our loft bedroom has stopped cooling and I reckons it's the compressor. Is it worth replacing or should we just get a new unit?

Probably best to get a new unit but depends on how old the current one is as it might still be within warranty period if it was installed recently.

If the compressor has failed, I’d get a proper diagnosis before deciding. Compressor replacement can be expensive, and on an older air-con unit it may not be economical once labour, refrigerant and parts are included.

If the unit is relatively new, well maintained and otherwise in good condition, replacing the compressor could be worthwhile. If it’s older, has other issues, or uses an outdated refrigerant, I’d generally lean towards replacing the whole unit with a modern, more efficient model.

I’d get a couple of quotes for both options and compare the costs. A reputable air-con engineer should also confirm that it actually is the compressor, as a faulty capacitor, fan, sensor or refrigerant issue can cause similar symptoms.

If it is the compressor by the time you get a new 1 plus to install you’ll be able to get a new 1 so my bet is get a new 1 mate
