So in my house we use an open fire, burning coal and wood. The fire surround is like a stone veneer but with chunky stone which appears to be directly cemented to the wall. The stones are at least 100m thick. Its essentially a a 1.8m long by 1m high wall on the chimney. I dont like the site of the wall as it gives old pub vibes. I want it to be tiled. Can i use something directly on the stone? Like a plaster which i can then tile on? I'm just concerned on it withstanding the heat of the fire. I fear that if i knock it back it'll cause more damage than its worth as the mantel is sitting on the wall also. What are my options for the wall to allow it to be tiled on?
