Why is there a dripping noise when heating comes on?

The system seems to be working fine overall, but the noise is new and a bit annoying, so I’m wondering what usually causes it? What's the most common thing I should check myself and possible reasons?

"It could be just expansion noise. Or condensate dripping through trap."

"A dripping noise when the heating comes on is actually quite common, and in most cases it’s nothing serious – just a bit annoying!

The most common reason is simply the pipes expanding as they heat up. When the heating kicks in, the pipework warms and slightly expands. If the pipes are running through tight spaces in floors or walls, they can rub slightly and create a ticking or dripping-type sound.

It can also be:

Pipes touching wood or other surfaces as they expand

Water moving through the condensate pipe (if you have a combi boiler)

A bit of air in the system (you could try bleeding the radiators if needed)

If your heating is working properly, there are no visible leaks, and the boiler pressure is stable (usually around 1–1.5 bar when cold), it’s most likely just normal expansion noise.

That said, if it’s getting louder or you’re unsure, we’re more than happy to take a look for peace of mind."
