"Cracking or popping noises at night are usually normal and caused by temperature changes. As the house cools down, materials like timber, metal pipes, floorboards, and plaster expand and contract, which can create cracking sounds.
Common sources include roof timbers, heating pipes cooling after use, floorboards, and walls settling. It’s usually harmless.
However, if the noises are very loud, frequent, or getting worse, it’s worth checking for loose floorboards, pipes not properly clipped, or signs of movement or damp. In rare cases, pests in lofts or walls can also cause noises."

"Most cracking noises at night are normal, caused by temperature changes and the house settling. If cracks are large, widening, or accompanied by doors/windows sticking, it could indicate structural issues, and a builder or structural engineer should inspect.

"Cracking or creaking noises at night are very common and, in most cases, nothing to worry about.
The main reason this happens is temperature change. At night, your house cools down and materials like timber, plaster, pipes, and metal naturally expand and contract. Because everything is quieter at night, these normal movements become much more noticeable, especially in walls, ceilings, loft spaces, and around radiators or pipework.
Other common, harmless causes include:
Timber joists moving slightly as they cool
Roof timbers adjusting after the day’s heat
Central heating pipes contracting when heating switches off
Plasterboard settling against studs or joists
However, there are a few situations where cracking noises could indicate an issue, such as:
New or widening visible cracks in walls or ceilings
Doors or windows suddenly sticking or not closing properly
Cracks that appear suddenly after building work
Loud, sharp bangs rather than gentle creaks
If the noises are occasional, don’t come with visible damage, and haven’t worsened over time, they’re usually just part of a house “settling” and reacting to temperature changes.
If you do notice new cracks, movement, or changes to the structure, it’s worth getting a builder or surveyor to take a look for peace of mind."

"More than likely temperature drop . Is it more noticeable in colder months , also the age of the building plays a massive part in diagnosing the potential problem"

"This is most likely due to temperature changes (most common). As evening arrives, the air cools down after the warmth of the day. Building materials expand when warm and contract as they cool, which can cause:
Timber framing or floorboards to make cracking or creaking noises."
