When to hire a tree surgeon?

When would I need to hire a tree surgeon and when I could do things DIY? Is there a rule of thumb or does it really depend heavily on the nature of the work?

"To avoid damage to your property, surrounding areas or health of the tree you should leave this kind of work to trained professionals this goes without mentioning possible life changing accidents or worse."

"It’s entirely up to once self. If you are not experienced or qualified I would avoid using a chainsaw."

"It depends on the height, risk, and complexity of the work — but there is a practical rule of thumb.

DIY is generally reasonable when:

You’re pruning small trees you can reach safely from the ground

Branches are under roughly wrist-thickness

No climbing, chainsaw use at height, or heavy timber handling is involved

The tree is not protected (TPO / Conservation Area)

There are no nearby targets such as buildings, roads, greenhouses, or power lines

Basic hedge trimming or light formative pruning of small ornamental trees is usually fine for a competent homeowner using the correct tools safely.

You should hire a tree surgeon when:

The tree requires climbing or ladder work

A chainsaw is needed off the ground

Large limbs are being removed

The tree is close to buildings, roads, neighbours, or utilities

The tree is diseased, storm-damaged, or structurally compromised

It may be protected by planning controls

Tree work becomes high-risk very quickly. Falls from height and chainsaw injuries are among the most serious accident categories in the industry. Improper pruning can also permanently damage or destabilise a tree.

In short:
If the job involves height, weight, risk to property, or legal considerations — it’s professional territory. If it’s small, reachable, and low risk, careful DIY may be acceptable."

"Tree Surgeons are fully experienced and insured to carry out all sizes of work, from small to large jobs."
