When should I hire an architect?

Is it advisable to hire an architect before hiring a plan designer? Does it depend on the project? And if so, under what circumstances should I hire an architect first and vice versa. Thank you for your time.

"Depends on what you want. For example I’m an architectural designer so I do planning permission drawings for people to just want extensions because the process isnt complicated. But if you want to build a new build it’s best to go to an architect."

"So really we find we provide architectural drawings as a visual aid for clients, the structural designs whilst detailed are not architectural but serve the purpose to build to.
Also if smaller works can save by not adding the need for architectural drawings- that’s said we combine our structural and architectural design package for around £1,000 on all projects if required"

"You should hire an architect before the building work starts to help with the drawings in the planning of the work"

"If you are considering building an extension, making major alterations, or building a completely new house, you should consider hiring an architect to help you. An architect is a professional person who spends all his or her working hours looking at building projects."
