When is pollarding actually needed?

How can I tell if a tree needs pollarding or whether another approach would suffice?

"Pollarding is not routine tree surgery and is only appropriate in specific situations.

It’s normally used where a tree needs to be kept at a fixed size on a permanent management cycle, often because of space constraints, proximity to buildings or highways, or historic management. Once a tree is pollarded, it commits the owner to ongoing, regular re-pollarding for the rest of the tree’s life.

Pollarding may be appropriate when:

The tree has been pollarded historically and needs continuation

There are severe space constraints and no alternative management option

Regular reduction is required to control size near infrastructure

Pollarding is usually not appropriate for:

Trees that have never been pollarded before

Mature or veteran trees where large wounds would be created

Situations where a lighter crown reduction or thinning would achieve the aim

A key test is proportionality. If the objective can be met with a crown reduction, crown thinning, or selective pruning, those options are usually preferable and less stressful for the tree.

In short: pollarding should be a last-resort management tool, not a default choice. If it’s being suggested, there should be a clear reason why a less invasive approach isn’t suitable."
