A site visit to see the tree and access conditions
A written estimate showing scope of work, prices, and terms
What is not usually free:
Detailed arboricultural reports or surveys
Risk assessments or method statements written up front
Formal advice on legal matters or planning strategy
For straightforward tree work, a free written quote is standard — but make sure it includes:
Clear scope of work (what exactly will be done)
Prices broken down by task or measure (labour, chip removal, traffic management, etc.)
Any assumptions (access, protection of surfaces, disposal method)
VAT and payment terms
If a contractor tries to charge just to view the site or won’t put a quote in writing, that can be a red flag — or at least something to question before you proceed."
